            December 2011 Newsletter

            Merry Christmas to All!!

Usually we wait until 1st of December to put our Christmas tree up at reception, however, due to the childish love we have for Christmas we had it up by 24th November.  The whole team at LSH loves Christmas and usually you will find that the week leading up to Christmas we are listening to Christmas carols and wearing ridiculous (but hugely fun) Christmas hats.  Oh and don't forget about our chocolate and lolly treats at the reception desk!!

From the team at LSH a huge thank you for continuing to work with us and we hope that you all have an amazing Christmas and even better New Years!!

            LSH Christmas Hours

We will be closing 12:00pm on 23rd December 2011 and re-opening 8:30am Wednesday 4th January 2012.  During this close down we will still be processing any wages that fall due.  We will be in contact with applicable payroll clients to discuss closer to Christmas.

Chamber of Commerce 2011 Business Excellence Awards 2011

The 2011 Business Excellence Awards come to a close on Friday 18th November 2011 at the Gala Dinner where the winners were announced.  It was a fantastic evening and some very deserving winners!  Here at LSH we encourage everyone to think about entering next year as it is a great opportunity to go through the business planning process (if you haven't done so already), compare your business to others, gain exposure and receive feedback from the judges on areas where you can improve.

            Business Tip of the Month

What Not to Do When an Employee asks for a Payrise:   If an employee plucks up the courage to ask you for a payrise, make sure you:

            • Listen to them and let them have their say
            • Ask them why they think they deserve it
            • Ask them how much they want
Don’t instantly say no and don’t send them away feeling dejected and unheard.  Recently we heard of an employee asking their boss and their boss put their hand up and said I don’t want to hear it, there is no way we will be giving any payrises.  That employee felt stupid for asking and completely unappreciated to the point where they no longer enjoy working for that particular company and they have started looking for another job.

            Consider these responses instead:

            • Say that you need to crunch the numbers and get back to them
            • Advise them that unfortunately the company is not in the financial position to give out any payrises, even though they deserve it, but to approach you again in six months and you will reassess it
            • Or in the circumstance where the employee's performance doesn’t warrant it, tell them the performance issues and give them something to work towards and say once these things have improved you are willing to discuss a potential payrise

Remember, that your employees need to feel appreciated and need to be heard.  Look after them as a happy employee is a productive employee.
